The pounding hits of Gary U.S. Bonds are an irresistible invitation to an instant party. The early 1960s were dominated by formulaic twist workouts and pre-fabricated teen idols, but Gary was a throwback. After producer Frank Guida performed some double-tracked magic on his vocals, here was a rock ‘n’ roll singer whose pipes sounded powerful enough to rattle walls. Bonds’ supercharged smashes for Guida’s Norfolk, Virginia-based Legrand Records blasted forth with unbridled energy - in no small part due to Guida’s highly innovative production techniques and the stellar house band that he assembled, The Church Street Five (featuring tenor saxmen Earl Swanson and Gene “Daddy ‘G'" Barge).
